After meteorological material study and analysis collected in many years , Shi Xinghe , a senior engineer in Qinghai Weather Station, holds that the insufficient precipitation in Madoi County for 9 years continuously since 1995 and the high temperature lead to a drought period over seasons and cause the lack of surface water .

The 3 main causes of the water drain of the Yellow River for a long time , according to the analysis of departments in charge of meteorology , water conservancy and livestock , are as follows : firstly , the branches of the Yellow River can not get water supply due to year-by-year drought in the source area of the Yellow River under the influence of the global warming ; secondly, the capability of water reservation declined obviously and variant springs become dried up due to serious grassland deterioration and desertification; thirdly, many lakes around the source area of the Yellow River become substantially shrunk and even dried up , with some of the out-flowing lakes have become inland lakes due to the deteriorated ecological environment.
Madoi, which was once rich in swamp and wetland and well-known as ¡°a county with a thousand lakes¡± , is the first county that the Yellow River passes by . Now there are only 260 lakes that are larger than 0.06 sq kms.
