QHNEWS--News from related department indicates that the water level of Qinghai Lake will be still on a trend of declining before 2010 in virtue of drought and lack of rain along the drainage area of Qinghai Lake.

Covering an area of 4,232 sqkm, Qinghai Lake is located on the northeast edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with an altitude of 3,260 meters and is the largest inland salty water lake in China.

Based on the research on the factors variating the water level of the Lake in recent 42 years, staff in charge in Qinghai Provincial Center of Meteorological Information says that human's activities and natural phenomena are the two aspects bringing about the water lever declining.

In mid 1980s, human¡¯s water use made up one fifth of the Lake water's losing amount per year. The researching estimation in early 1990s showed a 0.436 billion-cubic meter water losing in the past years, of which human¡¯s water use amount decreased to 8.7 % of the total water losing amount.

Consequently, the water level of the Lake lies on the amount of the flux flowing in , the rain and the evaporation.

The yearly average water amount flowing into the drainage area of the Lake in recent 42 years has been a declining trend, and it takes on a even serious situation since 1990s.

Qinghai Provincial Center of Meteorological Information has established a data model that can predict the water level variation of Qinghai Lake.

The data model accurately predicted the Lake¡¯s water level declining situation for 2003. In the prediction on water level fluctuation trend for the future 10 years, it gives a mostly-declining trend till 2010. (2004-09-22)
