Qinghai is a place suggestive of poetry or painting but it is not so remote. From its natural location, Qinghai, whose main body forms a part of the magnificent Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, lies to the west of the middle part of the Chinese territory, with Gansu Province, Sichuan Province, Tibet and Xinjiang autonomous regions as its neighbours.
The province stretches 1,200 kilometres long from north to south and 800 kilometres wide from east to west, with a total area of 721,200 square kilometers, which amounts to one thirteenth of the total area of China.
