QHNEWS -- Invited by Qinghai Provincial Government, a 11-member group consisting of experts and officials in the State¡¯s related organization, including Academician Zhang Xinshi of the CAS (the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Academician Shan Lun of the CAE (the Chinese Academy of Engineering), arrived in Qinghai for a 4-day investigation tour along the Huangshuihe River, upon which they will draw up a construction program on the term of the Huangshuihe River. They started the tour on June 13.

The investigation puts the highlight on the current ecological situation at the riverhead and along the Huangshuihe River, and discussion on the program of ecological control.

General situation about the Huangshuihe River

Occupying only 2% of the whole province's land, the Huangshuihe River Area is the center of Qinghai Province's politics, economy and culture and the hub of communication and it feeds nearly 60% of the province's population. The drainage area is also the most important screen of ecological protection in the east part of Qinghai. The sustainable development of Qinghai's economy and society and the maintenance of the ecology depends much upon the ecological control around the drainage area of the Huangshuihe River.

As the biggest branch along the upper Yellow River, the Huangshuihe River is formed with its stem flux and the Daitonghe River, covering a drainage area of 32,863 square kilometers.Originating from the southern slope of Mt. Daban in Haiyan County, it flows from west to east by Haiyan County, Huangyuan County, Huangzhong County, Xining City, Datong County, Ping'an, Ledu County, Minhe County and Guansu's Lanzhou City and Yongjing County , where it joins the Yellow River. It is 374 km long , of which 336 km are in Qinghai.

It was once an ecologically fine area with flourishing plants and varieties of wild animals. Despite the hightened strength on ecological control since the implementation of the western development strategy, the human's frequent activities, the global warming and the ecological-control-based financial insufficience, especilly the neglect of integrated program, have made the worsening ecological status not be curbed from the root.

It's still facing problems of heavy losses of water and soil, weakening water-keeping ability at the riverhead, intermittent drying up and natural disasters, which are caused by factors both of nature and human. The human factor will comparatively less affect the ecological environment as the State's more attention on this regard while the natural factor will act a more negative role little by little.  Editem (June 13, 2005)
