QHNEWS -- Authorized meteorologists indicated on June 21 that the Sanjiangyuan Area is facing severe challenges from the warming climate as phenomena of glacier melting, swamp aridity and grassland degradation have appeared during the past few decades.
At an academic seminar on the countermeasures to the climate changes in the Sanjiangyuan Area and its impact held on June 21, Sun Honglie, an academician of the CAS (the Chinese Academy of Sciences)£¬pointed out that the climate changes derive from the global warming and over depasturing.
The third assessment report released in 2001 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)of the UN pointed out that in the 21st century, the global warming will be much more serious than the last century for the temperature might never witness such a high rising speed in the previous 10,000 years, yet the Sanjiangyuan Area , the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and one of the most ecologically sensitive and frangible areas in China , has a higher temperature rising speed and extent than other places.
Li Lifeng , Direcor of the Freshwater and Ocean Project under the WWF (the World Wide Fund For Nature) China, indicates that the ever shrinking glacier and wetlands during the past few decades in the Sanjiangyuan Area also destroy the biodiversity there. The ecological situation in the Sanjiangyuan Area ,where provides water to the three main rivers in China, directly impact the ecology and the water security for hundred millions of people in the lower river reaches.
