QHNEWS -- Haiyan , a county on the northeast bank of the Qinghai Lake, carries out state-planned projects to maintain the ecology. The preliminary control of desertification on the northern bank of the Qinghai Lake is both an outcome and impetus of the prevention and control of desertification.
In recent years, the desertfication in the areas around the Qinghai Lake has become more serious. A land of 766.7 square kilometres in Haiyan County has been desertified, occupying 17.24% of its total land area; degraded grassland has extended to 791.8 square kilometres, 17.8% of the county's total land area; and the area of soil erosion amounts to 357 square kilometres, 8.03% of its total land area.
Since 1980, Haiyan County has been successively implementing ecology-related items initiated by the country, placing emphasis on the desertification control around the Qinghai Lake.
With a fund of approximately 11.39 million Yuan, by 2000 , the county has reconverted 95,500 mu of farmland into forests or grassland, afforested 40,800 mu and protected 102,700 mu of forests by blanking off mountains. Through 20-year-odds unremitting work, it takes on a preliminary effect in the desertification control as the forest coverage has risen up to 30-40% from previous 10-20%.
