QHNEWS -- The first-phase ecological migration project for the residents in Qumalai County , Yushu Prefecture has recently started in Golmud. This is a further step after the ecological migration at the riverhead of the Yangtze launched last year.

Funded with 67.05 million Yuan, the ecological migration project in Qumalai County is planned to effectively restore the 8.72 million mu of degraded grasslands in the county in a 10-year period.

Qumalai, a county of Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, where the Yellow and the Yangtze originate from, is titled "the nearest county to the riverhead". It's the main water reserving place for the whole country's northern and southern water systems. Yet it has been facing a severe grassland degradation resulted from desertification and rat rampancy.

The measured data from the meteorologic bureau of the county show that the perennial firn has already reduced 95 per cent during the past few years, resulting in the dryness of 50 per cent of the rivers in the county.

Series of worring situations come forth, such as weather aridity, glacier shrinking, snow line raise , lake disappearance, wetland reduction, vegetation degeneration and desertification, which seriously threaten the ecosystem and the economic development in riverhead area.

According to the program of the migration project, between 2005 and 2009 , 1,000 households of nomads are to be resettled in Golmud, where has a comparatively developed economy.  Editem (July 7, 2005)
